Facilitating Physical Contact in Collocated Virtual Reality and Real- World Player Games through Wearable Touchable Interfaces

We will present the following demo at the CHI PLAY ’09 conference in Barcelona:

“Virtual Reality (VR) gaming environments can recreate dangerous or even physically impossible situations in an immersive way. However, VR players are isolated from the real world and the experience lacks some features compared to real games, i.e. the physicality of touching objects or other players. Furthermore, in traditional VR gaming, VR players cannot interact with real world (RW) players. Here, we are exploring how to collocate VR and RW players to play simultaneously in the same physical space using wearable touch-sensitive patches that can be attached to objects, walls or players and serve as a nexus between both players. We present the design of a gaming system, two games mechanics supported by it and a preliminary user evaluation to assess in which way physicality was enhanced.”

Tangible Technologies and Objects for Interaction in Immersive Virtual Reality

We presented the following demo in congreso Interacción’19 in San Sebastian.

“Immersive virtual reality environments allow interaction through generic devices with specific characteristics of such environments: three-dimensional interaction devices or wearable devices without cables. But the sensation of immersion is often diminished by the minimal feedback obtained from the virtual environment, for which haptic devices of different characteristics have been developed. However, these devices do not produce the sensation of touch of a physical object. In our project we create physical objects with tangible surfaces that are interactive in a virtual reality environment.
We have implemented two examples applications: in the first one we have placed in physical space real objects that correspond to virtual objects in a similar position in the virtual space, the user can move through the physical space which corresponds to the virtual space and can touch the physical objects that also exist in the virtual space. In the second we have created a physical reproduction of a mountain by 3D printing, through the interaction with capacitive sensors in the physical object we can navigate through a virtual space in which the same mountain is visualized in 3D.”

We just launched “rcitylab.eu”, to solve city challenges using actuated interface technologies

As initial activities we are organizing ideation workshop introducing to prospective collaborators the concept of cyber-cities through a divergent thinking based learning method, while at the same time sparking ideas in their minds that are gathered for applicability evaluation.

To setup a demonstrator testbed we are creating a functional demo city for an emergency based services and a remote surveillance applications. Although with minimal number of nodes, we are using proven large-scale communication mechanisms.

Asier Marzo PhD, congratulations for “demonstrating acousting levitation is possible theoretically and in a real human computer interaction tool”

His contributions is so outstanding that it was published in Nature Communication journal ranking 3 in a list of 63, with an impact factor of 12.3.

As his PhD supervisor I had the pleasure to help him learn what research is and how to conduct it. Luckyly I was also able to learn things as he develop his work.

After his PhD Defense Asier has continued working on acoustic levitation in Bristol University as a Post Doc doing amazing things as this portable acoustic tractor beam:

Creating 3D photo-collage using Mobile Augmented Reality

A collage is an artistic composition made by assembling different parts to create a new whole. This procedure can be applied for assembling tridimensional objects. In this paper we present CollARt, a Mobile Augmented Reality application which permits to create 3D photo collages. Virtual pieces are textured with pictures taken with the camera and can be blended with real objects.

Photopieces en appStore: herramienta creativa desarrollada en UPNa

Durante los últimos meses y como parte del trabajo de fin de Master de Asier Marzo hemos desarrollada una aplicación para iPhone que permite realizar photo-collage on the fly.

Photopieces es una herramienta creativa que permite realizar photo-collage on the fly de una manera muy sencilla. Photopieces presenta al usuario una plantilla preconfigurada (también se pueden crear plantillas propias) para que realice fotografías con la forma de las regiones de la plantilla, las fotografías realizadas se incorporan automáticamente al collage mientras se siguen sacando fotografías en otras zonas de la plantilla.
Por supuesto hemos hecho varias pruebas con diferentes tipos de usuarios, todos se han mostrado muy interesados por la herramienta y bastantes de los collages resultantes pueden ser calificados como originales.

Nueva York = Creatividad y Tecnología, aplicaciones en Publicidad y Educación

En una sola visita a NY me puse poner al día de las ultimas aplicaciones creativas. Primero asisti a la conferencia Creativity and Technology con un selecto grupo de presentaciones sobre las ultimas aplicaciones de diferentes tecnologías en el mundo de la publicidad. Después me reuní con el equipo del Institute of Play, un spin-off de la escuela de diseño Parson, para explicarles el proyecto TangibleIdeas. El institute of play se dedica a incorporar herramientas tecnologicas en entornos educativos con un modelo educativo novedoso basado en la creación y desarrollo de juegos por parte de los alumnos, tiene muchisimos proyectos en marcha: http://www.instituteofplay.org/work/. Suena diferente y atractivo para los alumnos, aunque todavia esta por demostrar que funcione, pero estan en ello tienen “tomada” una escuela de secundaria en la que estan realizando “experimentos” con los propios alumnos. Les interesaron bastante nuestras ideas, y quedaron que probarian a utilizarlas.
